We installed broadcast equipment for many years. We know it is often very difficult to find the best combination of price and quality. There are usually no simple answers and we concentrate on supply rather than technical advice.
We recommend the following:
1. When buying equipment, see if it's worth looking further into the future and upgrading your system already.
2. Try not to patch an old system, but integrate it as part of a new system, or use it as support for the new system.
3. Go digital, involve computers, avoid moving parts and tapes.
4. Do not pay too much. The top quality of today will be average tomorrow. Especially true for digital.
5. Consider universally accepted formats/connectivity used by both video and IT, for example Ethernet. Have a look at open source.
6. Consider branded equipment as an insurance premium. Do not pay much more for branded equipment unless you depend on reliability. Note that with mechanical/optical parts the extra reliability of branded equipment should be valued more than for electronics.
7. Avoid depending on equipment reliability, even if you buy branded equipment. Have replacement equipment, rental provision, archive.
